Medical Equipment Labels That Survive Sterilisation Cycles

Medical equipment faces a unique challenge: identification must survive repeated sterilisation while remaining readable, scannable, and hygienic. Standard labels fail after a few autoclave cycles. The image is photographically developed within the anodic layer, sealed inside the aluminium, not sitting on the surface. This construction has been independently tested to AAMI ST79 standards by Pacific BioLabs. When the image is sealed within the metal, the sterilisation process that destroys conventional labels simply passes over Metalphoto without effect.

Steam sterilisation is brutal on labels. Temperatures of 134C. Saturated steam under pressure. Repeated cycling, sometimes daily. Most label materials simply cannot cope. Plastic labels soften, warp, and degrade. Adhesives fail in the heat and moisture. After a handful of cycles, labels lift, curl, or become illegible.

Can these labels survive repeated autoclave sterilisation?

Yes. Metalphoto labels are tested to survive thousands of steam sterilisation cycles at temperatures up to 134C. Unlike plastic labels that soften, warp, or delaminate, or adhesives that fail under heat and moisture, Metalphoto stays legible and scannable throughout the operational life of the instrument or equipment.

Do you support UDI compliance labelling?

Yes. We produce UDI-compliant labels for Class I, II, and III medical devices. Labels incorporate both human-readable text and machine-readable Data Matrix codes (GS1 compliant) that remain scannable throughout the device service life, including repeated sterilisation and reprocessing cycles. We work from your device identifier data to produce consistent variable data across production runs.

What file formats do you accept for medical label artwork?

We accept vector formats (PDF, EPS, AI, SVG) for sharpest results, plus high-resolution raster images (PNG, TIFF, JPG). Our designers can create artwork from your rough specifications - just provide your device identifiers, UDI data, and any existing label dimensions or installation requirements.

How long do medical equipment labels take to produce?

What material thickness options are available for instrument marking?

Three gauges are available: Standard (0.5mm) for equipment labels and rating plates, Thin (0.3mm) for instrument marking and limited space applications, and Foil (0.25mm) for curved surfaces and small surgical tools. The right gauge depends on the instrument size, mounting method, and sterilisation protocol.

Do your labels harbour bacteria like surface-printed alternatives?

No. Metalphoto is tested by Pacific BioLabs and confirmed not to harbour bacteria. Because the image is sealed within the anodised aluminium, there is no ink layer or surface texture for microorganisms to colonise. The sealed surface is non-porous and can be cleaned and sterilised without damage - a key advantage over printed or coated label materials.

Can you match existing medical label specifications?

Yes. We regularly match existing label specifications for replacement programmes where instruments or equipment already have designated label positions and dimensions.
