Marine & Submarine Labels for Durable Identification at Sea

Salt water destroys most labels within months. Yours need to last decades, whether fitted to a Royal Navy submarine, an offshore platform, or a commercial vessel operating in the harshest ocean conditions. We manufacture marine and submarine labels using Metalphoto anodised aluminium, a material specifically engineered for prolonged exposure to salt spray, water immersion, UV radiation, and the constant mechanical stress of marine environments. From valve identification plates in engine rooms to equipment rating plates on exposed deck fittings, we supply labels that remain legible throughout the operational life of the vessel.

The image is not printed onto the aluminium surface, it is sealed within the anodic layer itself. Think of it as photography inside metal rather than printing on top of it. There is no ink layer for salt water to attack, no surface coating for UV to degrade, and no adhesive seam for moisture to penetrate. The result is a label that stays legible for decades in conditions that destroy conventional alternatives.

500+ Hours salt spray (ASTM B117)
20+ Years UV exposure equivalent
-55C to +260C Temperature range
7-10 Days production

Salt spray testing to ASTM B117 confirms 500+ hours of continuous exposure without degradation. Abrasion resistance matters too: equipment gets cleaned, inspected, and handled. Ropes and chains contact label surfaces. Metalphoto survives 7,000 Taber abrasion cycles. For submarines and underwater applications, the sealed anodic layer provides genuine protection against prolonged immersion.

FormatsMarine Label Formats

Marine labels come in formats designed for the specific demands of naval, offshore, and commercial marine environments. The right choice depends on where the label will be fitted and how it will be accessed during the vessel operational life.

Marine Plate Labels

Flat identification plates for surface mounting on equipment panels, pump housings, and deck fittings. Typically predrilled for bolt or rivet fixing. Standard and custom shapes in Metalphoto anodised aluminium for maximum marine durability.

  • Standard and custom shapes available
  • Ideal for valve identification in process plant
  • Clear numbering for maintenance referencing
  • Works where surface mounting is not practical

Hanging Tags and Valve Markers

Designed for pipework, valves, and overhead fittings where surface mounting is not practical. Typically supplied with predrilled holes for wire, chain, or cable tie attachment. Common in engine rooms, pump spaces, and deck machinery where labels must be clearly visible without accessing panels.

  • Bolt, rivet, or screw fixing options
  • Suitable for vibrating or handled equipment
  • Anodised aluminium for harsh industrial environments
  • Custom wording and numbering for each tag

Self-Adhesive Marine Labels

Industrial grade adhesive labels for clean flat surfaces where drilling is not desirable. Suitable for electrical panels, control enclosures, and instrumentation in engine rooms and below-deck spaces. 3M marine grade adhesive where specified.

  • Strong industrial adhesive backing
  • Works on smooth, clean metal surfaces
  • Thin profile, no protruding fixings
  • Suitable for indoor plant and machinery

CompareMarine Labels vs Other Identification Solutions

If you are evaluating identification solutions for marine environments, it helps to understand what marine labels are designed for and where alternative formats make more sense.

Marine Labels

Permanent identification for salt spray, immersion, and UV exposure. Marine labels are the right choice when labels will be exposed to ocean conditions, salt water cleaning, or long periods of high humidity. Common uses: engine room plates, valve markers, deck equipment labels, submarine identification, offshore platform marking.

Industrial Metal Tags

General purpose industrial tags for warehouse, factory, and plant environments. If the primary concern is scannable tracking rather than marine exposure, see our industrial metal tags page.

Equipment Nameplates

Comprehensive identification plates covering full technical specifications, compliance markings, and safety data. If you need to display voltage ratings, manufacturer information, or regulatory certifications on a piece of equipment, see our equipment nameplates page.

SocialWhat Our Clients Say

SpecMarine Label Specifications

Every marine label we produce is custom made to your exact specifications. There are no standard configurations — each label is designed and manufactured for its specific vessel, equipment, or project requirements. Download our Metalphoto datasheet for full material performance data.

Custom Dimensions

Every tag is made to order with dimensions that match your exact needs. We cut, shape, and manufacture to your specifications. Material thickness is determined by the metal type and intended environment, ensuring durability and performance for your application.

Fixing Methods

Predrilled holes at standard positions or to your specification. Common: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm diameters. Also available: slot punch for cable tie, keyhole fixings, adhesive backing, or no fixings where the tag will be held independently.

Material and Durability

For full material specifications including anodised aluminium performance data and Metalphoto ratings for harsh environments, see our metal labels hub page. Metalphoto datasheet also available to download.

ApplicationsMarine Applications

We supply marine labels across the full range of naval, commercial, and offshore applications. Our customers include shipbuilders, naval contractors, offshore equipment manufacturers, and companies supplying into the maritime sector. Labels are specified by engineering teams, procurement officers, and classification societies.

Warships and Naval Vessels

Warships and submarines operate in conditions that test every component to its limits. Our labels provide permanent identification for valve systems, electrical panels, safety equipment, and machinery. We currently supply labels into MOD submarine programmes where reliability is not a preference, it is a requirement.

Submarines and Underwater Applications

For submarines and underwater applications, the sealed anodic layer provides genuine protection against prolonged immersion. The aluminium substrate will not corrode, and the image cannot be removed by abrasion or chemical exposure. Labels identify safety critical valves, electrical systems, and pumping equipment at depth.

Commercial Shipping

Cargo vessels, ferries, tankers, and workboats all require durable identification throughout the ship. Engine room labels face heat, oil, and constant vibration. Deck equipment labels endure salt spray, UV exposure, and storm conditions. We supply labels to classification society standards where required.

Offshore Platforms and FPSO

Platforms and support vessels operate in some of the most demanding conditions imaginable. Equipment identification must survive North Sea conditions year after year. Our marine labels provide the durability and long-term readability that offshore operators and their contractors depend on.

Yacht Builders and Marine Equipment

Yacht builders and marine equipment manufacturers need labels that reflect the quality of their products. Engine bay identification, electrical system labelling, and safety information all benefit from the clean, professional appearance of Metalphoto anodised aluminium. Labels that outlast the vessel.

Coastal and Port Infrastructure

Salt spray and high humidity demand labels that will not corrode or delaminate. Port infrastructure, locks, and coastal buildings face marine conditions year-round. Tags on piers, moorings, and navigational equipment are typically specified in high-grade anodised aluminium or stainless steel where extra durability is required.
